Sébastien Desabre: ‘We’re Focused on Enhancing the Variety and Strength of Our Attacking Play

Coach Sébastien Desabre held a press conference at the Fédération Congolaise de Football Association (FECOFA) on Thursday 7 November 2024. In front of a group of journalists, the French coach discussed the attacking challenges facing his team in the qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) Morocco 2025. Despite generally satisfactory results and qualification, the Leopards have struggled to find their stride. Their victories have been hard to come by.

The figures speak for themselves: in four CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Congo’s strikers have averaged a paltry 0.1 goals per game. In six games since June, the attacking line has yet to find its rhythm.

We have some percussion, we play down the flanks and we have good central defenders to launch our attacks, like Chancel, Baka and Dylan. But even with all this variety, it remains difficult to play attacking football on an artificial surface.

Desabre points to the artificial turf at the Stade des Martyrs as an obstacle to his team’s fluidity. According to Desabre, the dilapidated pitch at the former Kamanyola stadium limits the speed of the ball and hinders the development of spectacular, fluid play.

We sprayed the pitch against Tanzania to speed up the game, but it’s difficult to create the kind of spectacle we want,” he notes. The ideal solution for the Democratic Republic of Congo “in the long term would be to opt for a hybrid or natural pitch”, which would better reflect the country’s potential.

In October, the Tricolores booked their ticket to Morocco with a 1-0 win over Tanzania’s Taifas Stars in Kinshasa and a 2-0 victory in Dar es Salaam. The graceful Leopards emerged unscathed from two duels in which the Taifas had them on the ropes. Their mastery of the art of defence and their ability to find their opponents at the back spared them any unpleasant surprises.

The defensive aspect is in place, but we still have a lot of work to do to strengthen the attacking aspect,” admitted Desabre. For him, it is imperative to improve the “variety” of our attacking game “to find a more effective balance between defensive solidity and attacking creativity. We are working on the variety of our attacking game,” he added.

The clash with Guinea’s Syli National in Yamoussoukro on Saturday 16 November 2024 is the fifth round of qualifying for the African Cup of Nations in Morocco. The Syli are determined to be a team with a vengeance and a “liberated” style of play. Desabre insists that even though Serhou Guirassy – the top scorer in these qualifiers with five goals from two games – is leading the way against them, they will go all out. If they’re stronger than us, they’ll win; if they’re not, we’ll win,” he warns.
