On Monday, the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) inaugurated a training of trainers session for officers from the Southern African Development Community Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC). The program, which runs from 4 to 15 November 2024, aims to enhance peacekeeping skills and support the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) in its efforts to bring peace to the east of the country.

At the opening ceremony, Ms. Vivian van de Perre, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Protection and Operations, stated that this initiative is in line with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2746 (2024). This resolution mandates MONUSCO to support SAMIDRC through improved coordination, enhanced information sharing and logistical support.

Why is this training and initiative important?

The training will cover several areas essential to peacekeeping operations, including human rights, international humanitarian law, protection of civilians, human rights due diligence policy, child protection, and prevention of conflict-related sexual violence. The goal is to ensure that SAMIDRC officers acquire the skills to provide standardized training in these critical areas.

Complementing this training initiative, MONUSCO has provided essential logistical equipment, including an armored vehicle and 30 sea containers, to support SAMIDRC’s operations and strengthen its operational capacity. This cooperation with SAMIDRC and other local and regional partners reflects MONUSCO’s commitment to addressing the security, governance and development challenges that impede peace in the region.

Deploying on December 15, 2023, SAMIDRC, which brings together regional forces from SADC, including Malawi, South Africa and Tanzania, as well as elements of the FARDC, aims to support the Congolese government in restoring peace and security in eastern DRC, faced with increased instability due to the activities of armed groups. The deployment decision was taken at the SADC Extraordinary Summit in Windhoek, Namibia, on May 8, 2023.
