In a press release, the office of Corneille Nangaa, former president of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), denounced the invasion of his home on Thursday morning, March 23, by a squadron of heavily armed national police.
In this document, Nangaa’s office explains that the presence of police officers at his residence was to announce that “the CENI had just withdrawn his security because of his political involvement and that they were there to carry out a check on the police officers assigned to his security.
“Corneille Nangaa’s office strongly condemns this violation of his home, as well as the illegal deployment of forces with the apparent aim of violating Corneille Nangaa’s constitutionally guaranteed fundamental freedoms, and calls on the competent judicial and military authorities to guarantee his safety,” reads the press release signed by Joseph Ilunga, Corneille Nangaa’s legal advisor.
He continued:
“As Honorary Chairman of the CENI, Corneille Nangaa is entitled to benefit from a guard committed to his security, in accordance with Law No. 18-021 of July 26, 2018, on the status of elected former Presidents of the Republic and establishing the benefits granted to former heads of constituted bodies. This security is in no way the result of a favor at the whim of the current President of the CENI, as he claims. Even if this were the case, such an institutionally organized issue should in no way depend on the whims of the moment.
